Federal health officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak linked to superfood supplements that has sickened 65 people across 28 states, including Tennessee and Kentucky.
(KTLA) — The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that the illnesses are connected to products sold under the Live It Up and Why Not Natural brands. The supplements were available through the companies’ websites, as well as online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, and Walmart.
Officials reported that at least 14 people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been confirmed.
Investigators determined that the contamination originated from moringa leaf powder used in both products. Consumers and retailers are being advised to thoroughly clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the supplements.
The FDA urged anyone who purchased the super greens products with expiration dates ranging from August 2026 to January 2028, or the superfood capsules with a July 2028 expiration date, to stop using them immediately and discard them.
“FDA is working with the firms to determine a root cause of the contamination and remove affected products from the market,” the agency said in a statement.
