FRANKFORT, Ky. — Two Kentucky lawmakers have filed bills aimed at protecting SNAP benefits from disruptions during federal government shutdowns.
Sen. Cassie Chambers Armstrong (D-Louisville) filed Senate Bill 135, which would allow the governor to step in and prevent interruptions to food assistance programs like SNAP.
“SNAP is how families put food on the table,” Chambers Armstrong said. “It is what parents rely on to feed their kids and what seniors depend on to make it through the month. No family should fear going hungry because of politics. We want the tools in place to protect Kentucky families during times of federal government shutdown or disruption.”
She emphasized that Kentucky should ensure clear protections for families who rely on federal assistance when access is at risk.
The bill comes after the most recent federal shutdown, which lasted 43 days and delayed SNAP benefits for nearly 600,000 Kentuckians.
A similar bill was filed in the House by Rep. Anne Gay Donworth (D-Lexington). House Bill 522 also aims to safeguard SNAP benefits, with both bills requiring the state to seek reimbursement once federal funding resumes.
