LOUISVILLE, Ky. — LG&E has identified the cause of a major power outage that left thousands of customers without electricity during the winter storm Saturday night.

Officials said someone released a group of foil balloons that drifted into the air and made contact with power equipment.

As a result, about 5,000 customers in the Shawnee and Chickasaw neighborhoods lost power.

LG&E urged the public not to release foil balloons.

“Foil balloons conduct electricity and can cause power outages, fires, and injuries if they come into contact with power lines,” the utility said on X.

Power was restored roughly an hour after the incident, according to Louisville Metro Emergency Services Executive Director Jody Meiman, who shared the update during a winter storm briefing on Sunday.
