LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Urban League has voiced cautious support for Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Brian Yearwood’s proposed $142 million budget cut plan, while stressing the need to closely monitor impacts on equity and student services.

The Urban League released its response to the proposed reductions on Sunday.

Yearwood presented the plan during a series of meetings as the district works to close a budget shortfall of more than $130 million. The Urban League said it appreciates the superintendent’s student-centered approach, describing the proposal as “brave, bold and well-thought out,” particularly for its effort to protect classroom instruction.

The organization said it generally supports a proposed $44 million reduction in central office spending and the elimination of nearly 300 non-instructional positions, noting that the move aligns with its long-standing call for a leaner administration.

However, the Urban League raised concerns about $41 million in proposed cuts to supplemental programs, including reductions to academic instructional coaches and other support roles that serve high-needs and Choice Zone schools.

The group said it will closely watch whether funding reductions, school closures, or mergers disproportionately affect low-income students, students with disabilities, and students of color.

It also plans to monitor how employees from eliminated positions are reassigned and whether the cuts impact transportation, mental health services, or special education support.

JCPS officials said the district is reviewing employee compensation, including possible changes to cost-of-living allowances that help staff keep up with inflation.

Employees affected by potential layoffs or job changes are expected to be notified by May 15, 2026.

The Urban League said it will continue working with the school district to support student achievement as the process moves forward.

The JCPS Board is scheduled to vote on a draft budget at its meeting Tuesday.
