LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) — A deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested following allegations of misconduct involving motor vehicle inspections.

Deputy Christopher Robinson faces four counts of second-degree forgery, four counts of second-degree perjury, and one count of first-degree official misconduct.

Court documents state that detectives with the JCSO Criminal Interdiction Division received a tip in early December alleging that Robinson, who worked in the Auto Inspections Division, had been forging forms to certify inspections for vehicles that were never inspected.

The tip prompted a two-week investigation during which detectives reviewed video footage from the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office and conducted physical surveillance of Robinson. According to the arrest report, both methods revealed that Robinson had “often submitted an overwhelming amount of TC 96-182 forms for vehicles that had not actually entered the inspection lot.”

On Dec. 22, detectives reported seeing an unidentified individual place a manila folder on Robinson’s desk while he was away. After Robinson returned, investigators said they observed him complete multiple TC 96-182 forms, place them inside the folder, and then store the folder in a desk drawer beneath another manila envelope used to collect money at the end of the day.

Detectives said they searched the folder while Robinson was at lunch and discovered five inspection forms paper-clipped to vehicle titles for cars that had not been inspected, along with copies of five different driver’s licenses.

Police said that after being read his Miranda rights and confronted with the evidence, Robinson admitted to forging inspection forms multiple times for multiple individuals over an unknown period. Robinson told investigators that the folder belonged to a man known to law enforcement for salvaging vehicles and who has previously faced multiple forgery charges.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Robinson has been suspended without pay while the criminal case proceeds. Officials also emphasized that the investigation is limited to the Auto Inspection Unit and is not connected to roadside law enforcement duties.

Robinson is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment Tuesday morning.
