LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Kentucky woman has been sentenced to nearly a decade in prison after her 3-month-old son drowned while she was under the influence of drugs.

Amber Winstead, 36, pled guilty in November to manslaughter in connection with the death of her infant son, Ki’Arri Rayne Winstead, which occurred on January 1 at a Motel 6 in Louisville.

Authorities said Winstead took a bath with her son while intoxicated and fell asleep, leaving the baby submerged. First responders pronounced the infant dead at the scene.

Winstead received a nine-year sentence: seven years for manslaughter and two additional years for a prior parole violation related to a 2021 narcotics possession case. She must serve 85% of her manslaughter sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

As part of her plea deal, a persistent felony offender charge was dropped. Winstead was arrested in the funeral home parking lot, just moments before her son’s memorial service. Her attorney stated that she wished to visit her child’s grave for closure before reporting to prison, though it’s unclear if that request was granted.

Judge Trish Morris acknowledged the tragedy and expressed empathy during sentencing.
