LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Dejaune Anderson, mother of 5-year-old Cairo Jordan, was booked into Louisville Metro Corrections on Thursday.
Anderson was arrested last March, ending a years-long nationwide manhunt. On Monday, a Jefferson County Grand Jury indicted her on charges of murder, first-degree manslaughter, first-degree criminal abuse, and abuse of a corpse. Prosecutor Tara Coats Hunt said the decision to move Anderson’s case to Kentucky was “complex and difficult,” noting that the shift ensures a stronger legal foundation and reduces the risk of appellate issues.
Another woman, Dawn Coleman, has already been sentenced to 30 years, with five years suspended, for her role in Cairo’s death. Coleman pled guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and agreed to testify against Anderson. Court documents state that Coleman found Anderson on top of Cairo and later helped place the boy’s body in a suitcase before dumping it in southern Indiana.
Anderson’s trial has faced numerous delays. Originally set for August 2024, it was postponed to October and then further delayed. She previously sought to represent herself, made numerous unsubstantiated claims, and resisted court-ordered psychiatric exams, which extended the timeline.
Indiana Judge Larry Medlock eventually ruled against her self-representation and ordered psychiatric treatment, which Anderson completed by February 2025. She is now cooperating with her court-appointed attorney.
With the case moving to Kentucky, Anderson is scheduled to be arraigned on December 15, but it is unclear when her murder trial will begin.
