LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – A Louisville woman has accepted a plea deal after being charged with manslaughter in the death of her 3-month-old baby, who drowned in a Motel 6 bathtub.

Amber Winstead, 36, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in exchange for prosecutors dropping a charge of being a persistent felony offender. The state has recommended a seven-year prison sentence.

Police discovered the infant dead after responding to a reported drowning on New Year’s Day at a Motel 6. Investigators said Winstead admitted to using narcotics and getting into the bathtub with the baby. She told police that another person woke her up hours later to find the infant submerged and unresponsive. Winstead also admitted to using drugs throughout the day before the incident.

Her sentencing is scheduled for December 11.
