A 16-year-old boy accused of killing a 68-year-old woman in North Carolina was apprehended at Washington Dulles International Airport before boarding a trip to Ethiopia, according to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
CBP authorities arrested the teen on October 23 as he was about to leave for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Officers identified him using a warrant submitted into the National Crime Information Center database while conducting standard passenger checks on overseas flights.
According to CBP, the juveniles are one of two juveniles accused of killing Pamela Shanks, 68, of Gastonia, North Carolina, on October 19.
According to officials, he is facing many felony counts, including first-degree murder, firearm-related homicide, discharging a weapon into occupied property, and minor possession of a pistol.
After locating the warrant, CBP inspectors validated it and established that Gastonia police planned to extradite the teenager. Officers also phoned his parents before handing him over to Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police.
“Customs and Border Protection officers are committed to working with our federal, state and local partners to identify dangerous fugitives who attempt to flee their charges and return them to face justice. This is one way in which CBP helps to keep our communities safe while also giving victims a voice,” said Area Port Director Christine Waugh, CBP Area Port of Washington, D.C.”
Authorities in Gastonia continue to investigate Shanks’ death.
The teen is accused of the murder but has not been convicted.
