2 fugitives apprehended in Massachusetts in connection with stabbing off-duty NYPD detective

Two fugitives wanted in connection with the stabbing of an off-duty New York Police Department detective were apprehended Tuesday in Lynn.

The United States Marshals Service’s Southern District of New York and District of Massachusetts said Wednesday that D’Angelo Caraballo and Sneider Mejia were apprehended after an investigation led them from New York to Massachusetts. Authorities claimed the two were wanted in connection with the attempted murder of an NYPD detective, who was stabbed on Friday.

According to the US Marshals Service, the investigation was assigned to the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, which gathered information indicating that the suspects fled the New York region together. Investigators finally tracked them down in Massachusetts and organized a targeted operation with help from the U.S. Marshals Service District of Massachusetts, Massachusetts State Police, and the Lynn Police Department. Both suspects were detained without incident.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the detective was stabbed several times during an attempted robbery in the Bronx after the suspects allegedly approached him and demanded goods. The detective was hospitalized and is now recovering. DHS identified the individuals as Dominican Republic citizens who were illegally present in the United States. According to the agency, both guys have previous offenses in New York. DHS also stated that an immigration judge issued a final order of removal against one suspect in May 2025.

“When individuals commit violent, unprovoked acts against members of law enforcement, there is nowhere they can hide,” U.S. Marshal Ricky J. Patel said in a statement. “From the second this case was assigned, the USMS in the Southern District of New York and the NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force worked around the clock, tracking these suspects across state lines to ensure they were apprehended without further violence.”

“The attempted murder of an off-duty NYPD detective is an attack on all members of law enforcement, and these two fugitives will now face justice,” said Dennis Matulewicz, the head of the US Marshals Service for the District of Massachusetts.

According to authorities, the accused are being held by Massachusetts State Police for extradition to New York.
