Two men from California were nabbed on Thursday after a traffic check in northwest Indiana, authorities said. They were allegedly smuggling 220 pounds of cannabis in a rental minivan.
A 34-year-old man and a 27-year-old man were detained when an officer pulled over their rental van on the Indiana Toll Road in Porter County for traffic offenses, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
During the stop, the officer observed several large boxes inside the van, and both occupants, who claimed to be traveling from California to New York, were “unusually nervous.”
A Lake County K-9 alerted the officer to the presence of narcotics, and investigators discovered and recovered 220 pounds of cannabis stashed in boxes in the van.
The guys in the vehicle, both from San Leandro, California, were held and later released pending accusations of drug possession and distribution outside of Porter County.
The investigation is still ongoing, and no other information was immediately provided.
This is at least the second occasion this week that Indiana investigators discovered massive amounts of cocaine being moved across the state during a traffic stop. On Sunday, Indiana State Police captured a guy who was trafficking hundreds of pounds of cocaine worth about $3.8 million across Indiana during a traffic stop on eastbound I-70 in Putnam.
