Law enforcement arrested an Indianapolis murder suspect in Ohio last week.
According to a public police record filed on Friday, Christopher Exilhomme, 22, was extradited from the Wyandot County Jail in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, to Marion County’s Community Justice Center. The exact circumstances underlying Exilhomme’s arrest are still unknown.
On May 21, Exilhomme was charged with one count of murder under Indiana’s public court reporting system. An affidavit for probable cause filed on May 22 suggests that the accusation Exilhomme faces is related to an April 4 incident.
According to FOX59/CBS4’s previous reporting on the incident, IMPD officers were dispatched to the 5600 block of Oliver Avenue, just off South Lynhurst Drive on Indianapolis’ west side, around 4:30 a.m. When police got on the site, they discovered a male shooting victim lying on the ground just inside the front door of a house.
Medics arrived to the home and pronounced the person dead on the spot. The victim is identified as Samuel Toussaint by a public police report, an IMPD monthly homicide summary, and a probable cause affidavit. The 22-year-old died of several gunshot wounds, according to the Marion County Coroner’s Office. His death was deemed homicide.
According to court papers, Exilhomme reportedly murdered Toussaint during a party at a home in the 5600 block of Oliver Avenue in the late evening of April 3 and early morning of April 4. Police said the celebration was held to commemorate a person’s release from jail.
Witnesses said authorities the shooting was the result of an altercation between Exilhomme and Toussaint. According to court documents, Toussaint and Exilhomme’s disagreement included a 16-year-old juvenile for whom they both had romantic feelings. According to some witnesses, shortly after Exilhomme arrived at the gathering, he stated that he would start shooting “if anybody plays with him.”
Police asked witnesses to recount what Toussaint and Exilhomme said during their altercation. Some witnesses said they couldn’t understand what Toussaint and Exilhomme were saying because they were speaking Haitian Creole during the battle. According to the Florida International University website, Hatian Creole is a French-based language that originated in Haiti and is spoken by over 13 million people around the world.
Some of the words they exchanged were in English. According to witnesses, Exilhomme could be heard asking Toussaint, “Why do you always f****** with every b**** I f*** with?” After Toussaint said “f*** you,” Exilhomme allegedly went outside, cocked his gun, returned to the house, and shot Toussaint four times.
According to witnesses, Toussaint collapsed after Exilhomme shot him once. Following the shooting, Exilhomme stood over Toussaint.
According to court filings, officers discovered evidence that Exilhomme shot Toussaint after he hit the floor. Officers discovered two bullet hits on the home’s floor. Two further bullet holes were found in a couch and on a wall.
According to public documents, the Marion County Coroner’s Office discovered injuries to Toussaint’s chest, upper back, left shoulder blade, and neck while conducting a field examination.
Following the incident, Exilhomme reportedly fled the scene. It is presently unknown how law enforcement tracked him down in Ohio. On Saturday, an entry in Indiana’s public court reporting system indicated that the warrant for Exilhomme’s arrest had been served.
A public police report shows that Exilhomme was previously arrested in Speedway. According to the report, cops caught Exilhomme in the 2200 block of Fair Oaks Drive on December 20 while taking a battery report.
Exilhomme was charged with domestic assault and marijuana possession after his detention. Both accusations he faced were misdemeanors.
On April 1, Exilhomme’s battery charge was resolved with a plea deal. As part of the plea agreement, the domestic battery allegation against Exilhomme was dismissed. He pleaded guilty to possessing marijuana.
Exilhomme was sentenced to eight days in jail after accepting the plea deal. A court order reduced Exilhomme’s sentence by four days to account for time previously spent. The remaining four days were deducted as credit days.
Exilhomme was already out of jail when his plea agreement was struck. The judge set his bond at $2,000, which was posted at the Marion County Clerk’s Office on December 23.
IMPD discussed Exilhomme with the United States Marshals Service as part of its inquiry. According to US marshals, Exilhomme had previously been involved in a domestic incident in Dover, Delaware.
Police believe Exilhomme lived in Delaware before migrating to Indiana. Investigators aren’t clear when Exilhomme moved from Delaware to Indiana.
Exilhomme’s Marion County Jail booking card states that his citizenship is related to Haiti. Jail logs do not indicate that any federal detainer requests for Exilhomme were made.
Exilhomme is scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing on Tuesday.
