Mother apprehended after teen child injured in e-motorcycle crash in Gilbert

A woman has been arrested after her teenage child was injured in an incident involving an electric motorcycle and another car in Gilbert on Wednesday night.

Gilbert police officers and firefighters responded to a collision on Lindsay Road at the trail crossing near Freestone Park around 8:30 p.m. According to Gilbert PD, the crash occurred when a 14-year-old on an e-motorcycle entered the road and refused to yield to oncoming traffic.

The teen was seriously hurt and taken to a hospital, but police say the injuries are not life-threatening.

The 14-year-old was charged with operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence. In addition, the teen’s mother was detained on a charge of intentionally allowing a child to drive without a valid licence.

The other driver remained on the scene and was charged for driving with a suspended licence.

The Gilbert Police Department has issued the following statement regarding the incident:

“Electric motorcycles are motor vehicles under Arizona law and are not permitted on public roadways unless the rider is 16 years old and has a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement, the motorcycle is registered and insured, and it displays a valid ADOT-issued plate. Riding on trails, paths, or roadways without meeting these requirements puts your child and others at serious risk. Parents are encouraged to talk with their children about the legal requirements and dangers associated with motorized devices before purchasing them or allowing their children to ride them.”

The Gilbert Police Department recommends that parents consult this website to see if their child’s vehicle is street-legal, which explains the differences between electric bicycles and electric motorbikes.

Last month, Gilbert police conducted an enforcement operation following complaints in the area of the Power Ranch community, which resulted in six arrests, including two parents. A total of 11 e-bikes and e-motorcycles were also towed during the operation.
