Two middle-aged sisters were taken into custody Thursday on suspicion of murdering their mother and badly neglecting their father, both of whom are octogenarians who cannot care for themselves, in the couple’s University City apartment.
According to the San Diego Police Department, Ingrid Wu, 52, and her 53-year-old sibling, Rebecca, were caretakers for their parents until Kun-Ying Yang, 81, died three months ago.
Patrol officers responding to a report of a medical emergency late on the evening of March 6 discovered Yang unconscious, lying face down in a space between a pull-out couch and a bed frame, according to SDPD acting Lt. Christopher Leahy. She was declared deceased at the scene.
According to police, Yang died as a result of positional asphyxia, with negligence leading to his death. Her death was ruled a homicide.
Investigators concluded that the suspects allegedly “endangered their parents’ health and failed to act as legally required, leading to the neglect of their 88-year-old father and the death of their mother,” Leahy said.
The sisters were arrested and put into Las Colinas Women’s Jail in Santee on accusations of elder abuse and murder.
