Ex-Baltimore educator sentenced to 2 years for immigration fraud

A former Baltimore educator has been sentenced to two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of firearms and falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen, according to ABC.

Ian Roberts was the previous superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools until his arrest by ICE in September 2025.

When Roberts was arrested, he was carrying a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash, and a fixed-blade hunting knife.

According to officials, he entered the nation from Guyana on a student visa in 1999 and was issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge in May 2024.

According to federal authorities, Roberts has not been authorized to work in the United States since December 2020 and cannot legally own firearms due to his immigration status.

Before moving to Des Moines, Roberts worked as an educator for Baltimore City Public Schools and Prince George’s County Public Schools.

He also served as the founding principal of Baltimore’s Friendship Academy of Science and Technology.

According to ABC, Roberts will be deported after serving his term.

The Des Moines School Board stated that it was not aware of Roberts’ immigration concerns at the time of his appointment.
