A former Lee’s Summit PTA treasurer has pled guilty to nine charges of bank and wire fraud for stealing over $100,000 from the organization, according to federal officials.
According to officials, Holly Mikkelsen could face up to 30 years in federal prison without parole.
Mikkelsen was the Summit Pointe Elementary School Parent Teacher Association’s (SPE PTA) treasurer in Kansas City, Missouri, from August 17, 2020 to July 23, 2025. The organization is a non-profit, school-based volunteer organization.
Prosecutors allege that while serving as treasurer, Mikkelsen made illicit withdrawals from the PTA’s checking accounts for personal gain. According to investigators, the alleged theft involved making and signing checks in the nonprofit’s name payable to herself, utilizing the funds for personal needs, withdrawing cash from ATMs, and transferring SPE PTA monies to her personal accounts.
“The council is taking immediate steps to strengthen financial accountability across all affiliated PTAs, including a full review of existing protocols, dual authorization requirements for financial transactions, board financial training, and consistent audit practices district-wide,” Lorenzo Harrison, Council President of LSR7 PTA. “The community will be kept informed as this process moves forward.”
Mikkelsen’s sentencing is scheduled for September 24.
