A welfare check request in West Virginia led to the discovery of a woman’s body under a blanket on the front porch of a home, according to authorities.
Investigators said 35-year-old Leroy Hunt has been charged with first-degree murder and child neglect creating risk of injury. He was booked into the Southwestern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility on Friday evening.
Officials identified the victim as Christina Hunt, though her age has not been released.
Around 10 a.m. Friday, a neighbor asked deputies from the Mingo County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a welfare check at a home on Triton Lane, just north of Delbarton. Before entering the residence, deputies found the woman’s body on the porch, covered by a blanket.
Authorities allege that Leroy Hunt shot his wife as she was entering the home. A 2-year-old child was also inside the residence at the time of the incident. Investigators said the suspect placed the child at risk during the shooting, though the child was not injured.
After deputies discovered the body, a standoff occurred between law enforcement and the suspect. Officials said Hunt later surrendered and was taken into custody.
An autopsy on the victim is scheduled through the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office as the investigation continues.
