Man critically injured in Louisville assault; suspect arrested, police say

Louisville — Police are investigating a violent early morning assault that left a man in critical condition, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Officers from LMPD’s First Division responded just before 2 a.m. on March 17, 2026, to the 400 block of East Market Street following reports of a fight.

When they arrived, officers found an adult man on South Jackson Street with serious injuries believed to have been sustained during the assault. Witnesses told police the suspect struck the victim with a 2×4 and then repeatedly kicked him in the head.

Officers provided first aid until crews from Louisville Fire Department and EMS arrived. The victim was transported to University Hospital, where he remains in critical, life-threatening condition.

Due to the severity of the injuries, LMPD’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.

While detectives processed the scene, officers canvassed the area, located a suspect, and took him into custody.

Police identified the suspect as Julius Howard. He has been charged with first-degree assault and booked into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, according to authorities.
