LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville man was convicted of murder earlier this month in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in September 2022.
The shooting happened around 8 p.m. on Sept. 11 in the 200 block of East Wampum Avenue near Interstate 264. Louisville Metro Police officers responded to the scene and found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He later died at the hospital.
Police quickly arrested Laron Spalding and charged him with murder. He was 51 years old at the time of the shooting. This month, a court found him guilty of murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman said Monday that Spalding’s conviction marks the first case secured by his Violent Crime Reduction Team.
“We created this first-of-its-kind team to go after trigger pullers,” Coleman said in a news release. “This murderer already had a felony conviction and shouldn’t have even had a gun. By working together with our Jefferson Commonwealth’s Attorney and federal partners to increase firearm prosecutions of all kinds in Louisville, we can take more criminals off the streets, hopefully before they take a life.”
In October 2024, Coleman and Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the formation of the team, which also includes local courts, the commonwealth’s attorney, Louisville Metro Police, and the county attorney’s office.
Coleman said the bipartisan effort aims to send a strong message to criminals.
“Historically, the Office of the Kentucky Attorney General has not had an active role in law enforcement here in Jefferson County,” he said when the team was announced. “That ends now.”
Spalding is scheduled to be sentenced in a Jefferson County courtroom on Feb. 9.
