Seven people were injured in a shooting near Indiana University’s campus this weekend.
According to police, authorities heard many gunshots in a huge gathering around Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street in Bloomington, Indiana, early Sunday morning and discovered seven people had been shot.
Police said they arrested one person, but they haven’t established whether that person fired the rounds.
The mayor of Bloomington, Indiana, criticized the state’s gun rules as “lax” and advocated for change. And, while we can advise individuals not to carry firearms to crowded public places, that is clearly insufficient,” stated Bloomington, Indiana, Mayor Kerry Thomson. “I’m currently working with state legislators to explore allowing cities like Bloomington to use the same event permitting framework that private organizations and sport stadiums do when holding large events.”
Thomson said the incident occurred on a busy weekend, which included Halloween, homecoming, and a huge football game. Bloomington, Indiana, police, Indiana State Police, and Indiana University police all had a safety plan in place, and more than 20 policemen were stationed on Kirkwood Avenue at the time of the incident, according to the mayor.
She claimed that these officers stopped any additional violence.
Police said they didn’t know the severity of the victims’ injuries, but their ages ranged from 17 to 27.
On the same night, a mass shooting occurred around 200 miles away in Bloomington, Illinois, a college town. The shooting killed a 19-year-old woman and injured seven others.
