4 taken into custody in Minneapolis after vehicle stolen, sheriff says

Four young men were taken into custody after fleeing law enforcement and cutting a dangerous path across Minneapolis Friday in a stolen car, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies initially discovered a stolen vehicle in northeast Minneapolis, which was linked to car break-in incidents on the city’s south side. According to the sheriff’s office, the driver fled the scene before a traffic stop.

“Minnesota State Patrol aircraft tracked the vehicle through northeast Minneapolis, downtown, and into south Minneapolis, driving dangerously at high speeds and going the wrong way down one-way streets,” the sheriff’s office said.

The Minneapolis Police Department stated that its units “followed from a distance,” but there was no pursuit.

Deputies eventually surrounded the vehicle on Nicollet Avenue and West 27th Street in the Whittier neighborhood. Two of the four guys inside attempted to flee on foot but were “quickly apprehended,” according to the sheriff’s office. Two of the accused are 18, and the other two are both 22.

According to police, when law enforcement halted the vehicle, it destroyed an unattended parked car.

All four are now detained in Hennepin County Jail and face criminal charges.
