Woman sentenced to 18 years in prison for 2020 Hillsboro wetlands homicide

A woman was sentenced to 18 years in prison for her involvement in the 2020 killing of Alexis Vega-Cruz in Hillsboro.

Viviana Lucinda Vallejo pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter on October 2, 2026.

On November 4, 2020, Vega-Cruz was discovered dead at Hillsboro’s Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve park. His death was deemed homicide. Police did not get a tip on the case until 2023.

According to authorities, the caller knew Tyren Todd Thomas, who confessed to killing Vega-Cruz for vengeance. Thomas is Vallejo’s co-defendant in this case.

Investigators stated Thomas felt Vega-Cruz had assaulted him months before the crime.

Investigators believe Thomas persuaded Vallejo to lure Vega-Cruz to the spot, where he shot and murdered him.

Both suspects were hauled into custody in June 2023. Thomas was detained in connection with Vega-Cruz’s death, while Vallejo was arrested for her role and ultimately charged with murder.

A Washington County Circuit Court condemned Vallejo to prison six years after Vega-Cruz’s death.

Thomas is set to go to trial in early 2027.
