Residents in the Fieldstone subdivision are expressing significant frustration. They report that individuals have been forcing open their mailboxes and stealing packages for more than eight months.
Juan Marquez, a board member of the neighborhood’s homeowners association, states that residents installed surveillance cameras to identify the perpetrators. The cameras initially reduced the frequency of the incidents, but the thefts eventually resumed.
“It has become almost routine to wake up, check the camera footage, and count how many mailboxes they broke into,” Marquez said.
The security cameras recorded two individuals tampering with the mailboxes on Friday morning. A separate individual was captured on video committing the same act in May. Marquez notes that some of the incidents suggest the involvement of individuals with authorized access.
“What stands out most is how quickly they enter and exit,” Marquez said. “But in some cases, it appears they possess a key.”
Additional security footage near the mailboxes shows an individual inserting an object into a mailbox, twisting it, and unlocking the compartment. One resident reports that the thieves cashed nearly $6,000 worth of checks and stole her personal identity.
“I was preparing to apply for my master’s program, but I can no longer do so because my credit has been severely damaged. This incident is affecting every aspect of my life, as my credit score dropped by 100 points after they opened fraudulent credit accounts in my name.”
The homeowners association confirms that it has contacted the postal service to request the installation of individual mailboxes for each residence in the neighborhood. According to the association, the postal service responded that providing individual mailboxes would not be a time-efficient solution for mail carriers.
Representatives from the postal service acknowledged the ongoing issue and stated that they are reviewing the situation. They indicated that they would provide further information at a later time.
