Suspect arrested and charged with murder in Blackville shooting

A 22-year-old Barnwell County man has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a Blackville man last month.

According to arrest warrants issued by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Antonio Montavius Battle is suspected of shooting and killing David Hammond Jr. on the nite of August 8 near a Campbell Street address in Blackville.

According to investigators, the shooting occurred around 10:30-10:45 p.m. in Hammond. He was shot numerous times and died as a result of his injuries.

The warrants claim that Battle was identified as the suspect based on witness testimonies and electronic evidence acquired throughout the investigation. Firearm-related evidence was also discovered on the scene.

SLED charged Battle with murder and carrying a weapon during a violent crime.

He was hauled into prison on Wednesday and placed into the Barnwell County Detention Center.

The Blackville Police Department sought SLED’s assistance in the case and collaborated with SLED agents throughout the investigation. The Blackville Police Department and the Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office helped in Battle’s arrest.

The case will be prosecuted by the Second Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
