A 19-year-old man is dead in a shooting along Mitthoefer Road on Indianapolis’ far east side Wednesday night.
Police are still investigating what caused the fatal shooting, which occurred after a rideshare driver picked up the victim and the car unexpectedly came under fire.
Responding to a plea for assistance, cops discovered a car with its back window shattered. Approximately 12 bullet holes were found in the back door and passenger side. “When I came to a halt, they kept firing on my car,” said the driver of the automobile that was damaged in the shooting.
That Uber driver, who asked not to be identified, recalled picking up a customer at a home in the Trails at Grassy Creek community shortly before 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
Broken glass remains on the street where the driver’s car was shot while waiting to get out of the area onto Mitthoefer Road. The gunfire struck a passenger in the car’s back seat as the culprit fled in another vehicle. The rider informed the driver that he was injured by a gunshot. “This victim was in a vehicle when this happened, which is very scary,” said IMPD officer Tommy Thompson.
IMPD validates the ride-sharing driver’s story. Jayden Sanders, a 19-year-old guy, died from gunshot wounds many hours after being transported to the hospital.
Police believe the shooting was targeted but are still seeking public assistance in solving the case. We simply want anyone with information to come forward. Who might have done this? What circumstances lead to this incident? That knowledge is currently crucial for detectives. That is why we are urging the public to come forward, since we cannot do it alone,” Thompson stated.
The Uber driver, who jumped out of his damaged car and called 911, stated that he has no idea what drove the murder and is grateful that he was not also slain. Yeah, I was driving an Uber car when this happened. “I was completely shocked and out of my mind,” the driver added. “It wasn’t far from me. It’s only a couple of inches.
No arrests have been made in this case.
