A former nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center has been indicted on federal charges for allegedly getting a strong drug illegally.
Steve Michael Kelley, 58, faces one count of obtaining controlled substances through misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception, or subterfuge. He appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Elsa M. Bullard on Friday, according to U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen.
The indictment claims Kelley illegally procured hydromorphone, a restricted narcotic, between January 2025 and January 28. Hydromorphone is a potent opioid painkiller that is frequently used for severe pain.
The case is the result of an investigation by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, the Veterans Affairs Police Department, the Food and Drug Administration Office of Criminal Investigations, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Campbell Warner, an assistant US attorney, is prosecuting the case.
