A former Indiana University basketball player was apprehended June 28 in Carmel for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Carmel police arrested James Blackmon Jr., 31, soon before 1 a.m. near 106th and Pennsylvania streets after failing two field sobriety tests, smelling of alcohol, and speaking slurredly, according to a probable cause affidavit.
According to the affidavit, Blackmon confirmed to officers that he drank three glasses of white wine.
According to the complaint, police responded to the scene after getting a phone crash alarm when a passenger threw a phone out the vehicle’s window.
Police acquired a warrant for a blood draw to assess Blackmon’s blood alcohol level. The Carmel Police Department did not immediately respond to a question from Current regarding the outcome.
Blackmon attended high school basketball at Bishop Luers High School in Fort Wayne and Marion High School in Marion. He attended IU from 2014 to 2017, being the 50th player in school history to score more than 1,000 points.
Since leaving IU, Blackmon has competed in overseas basketball leagues.
Blackmon’s trial is scheduled for October 13 in Hamilton County.
