Child dies and adult in critical condition after shooting in Gary

A 10-year-old boy died after being shot during a family gathering in northwest Indiana on Sunday morning.

According to Gary police, the child was at a party in the 200 block of Chase Street around 12:49 a.m. when the shooting erupted.

The child, identified by the Lake County Coroner as 10-year-old Montana Weathers of Chicago, died a short time later at an area hospital.

Another individual was also shot. According to Gary police, the 50-year-old victim was transferred to a Chicago hospital and is currently in critical condition.

Another shooting occurred in Gary just 15 minutes before the Chase Street incident, with six people shot near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Hanley Street, according to police.

There was no immediate news on the victims’ conditions, and there is no indication that the shootings were related. An investigation into both shootings is ongoing.
