Detectives have apprehended a suspect in a 27-year-old murder in Balboa Park, and he is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, according to authorities.
On September 4, 1999, golfers discovered a body in the bushes in the 1800 block of Golf Course Drive and notified the police. Responding officers discovered a deceased woman, later identified as Diane Ayres, a 23-year-old San Diego resident, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that she was strangled.
Cold case investigators reexamined forensic evidence over the years, eventually identifying Christopher Creek as the suspect, according to officials.
The SDPD collaborated extensively with the FBI and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office throughout the investigation. Creek, 52, was discovered at Dodge State Prison in Chester, Georgia, where he was serving time for an unrelated violation.
On June 16, the Laurens County Sheriff’s Department arrested him on a San Diego homicide warrant and transported him to the Laurens County Jail.
Creek was extradited to San Diego on Tuesday and booked inside the Central Jail. He was expected to be arraigned on Thursday.
