A Green Township man accused of strangling his grandfather to death with a belt had his bond set at $2 million in court on May 16.
Elijah Ray McCulloch, 22, is charged with aggravated murder in the death of his grandfather, Alexander Metcalf, 69, according to court documents. He is being jailed in the Hamilton County Justice Center.
On May 15, a relative went to check on McCulloch and Metcalf and discovered Metcalf dead at the residence on the 6200 block of Sharlene Drive, investigators said. The relative explained that she was checking on McCulloch because his father had recently died.
According to investigators, McCulloch was not present at the home, but his cellphone was left there.
Green Township police said Cheviot police deployed police dogs to find McCulloch. He was recovered on the 6200 block of Werk Road.
According to prosecution documents, McCulloch admitted to authorities that he strangled his Metcalf during an interrogation shortly after his arrest.
McCulloch appeared before Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Gwen Bender on May 16.
McCulloch’s attorney, Craig Teepen, stated in court that his client had no past criminal history. Teepen stated that he struggles with mental illness and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Bender ordered a $2 million bond. Bender’s next hearing was scheduled for May 26, although a grand jury could indict him before then.
