An unlicensed driver from Mexico was apprehended after being pulled over while driving a vehicle with a fraudulent interim tag.
A deputy noticed Angel de Jesus Jaimez Perez, 25, driving a black Chevy Malibu with a temporary tag southbound in Webster around 3:35 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy’s attention was drawn to the tag since it was larger than the standard-issue temporary plate. A record check indicated that the vehicle’s registration had expired on July 25, 2009. As a result, he performed a traffic stop on State Road 471 and County Road 776, according to the report.
When asked for a driver’s license, Jaimez Perez presented a Mexican identification card. He didn’t have a license and instead showed a photo of a Mexican driver’s license on his phone. According to the report, the deputy was unable to ascertain whether the license shown in the photo was authentic.
Dispatch then ran Jaimez Perez through all 50 states to confirm he did not have a license. A further check of the VIN on the license plate revealed a black 2004 Saturn. The tag assigned to the Chevy Malibu has been canceled, according to the report.
Jaimez Perez was arrested on allegations of operating a motor vehicle without a valid license (second conviction), possessing a counterfeited license plate, and failing to register the vehicle. He was booked into Sumter County Detention Center and released after paying a $3,500 bond.
