Lightning strike sparks house fire in Oldham County during storm

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A lightning strike sparked a house fire Monday night in Oldham County.

North Oldham Fire Chief Jim Sohan said crews received the call around 7 p.m. and arrived by 7:15 at a home on Harbor View Court in Prospect. The roof collapsed onto the second floor, which then gave way and collapsed onto the first floor.

“When we first arrived, the homeowner told us his house had been struck by lightning, and he called 911,” said Sohan. “By the time we got there, the fire had already burned through the roof from one side of the house to the other.”

It took 46 firefighters to extinguish the blaze, and a crew stayed on scene overnight in case of another flare-up.

Everyone inside the home managed to escape safely. No injuries were reported.

A strong line of severe storms moved through the area between 7 and 9 p.m. Reports indicated widespread damage, including several downed trees and thousands of homes without power.

Part of I-264 in Jefferson County shut down around 10 p.m. after a vehicle stalled in standing water.
