Kentucky man charged with murder after allegedly stabbing girlfriend to death

A Kentucky man was taken into custody Saturday after police said he fatally stabbed his girlfriend. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at a residence along Kentucky Highway 72 in Harlan County.

State Trooper Shane Jacobs said that 36-year-old Michael Howard stabbed his girlfriend, 50-year-old Mary Clayborn, in the chest and neck. Authorities transported Clayborn to Harlan ARH Hospital, where she later died, Jacobs confirmed. Officials have scheduled an autopsy at the State Medical Examiner’s office.

Officers reported that Howard cooperated at the scene and arrested him without incident. He now faces a murder charge.

As of Monday, jail records show that Howard remains in custody at the Harlan County jail on a $1 million bond. Authorities have not yet scheduled a court date.

State police continued to investigate the case as of Monday.
