Kentucky Humane Society Breaks Ground on New Campus to Expand Services

The new KHS Animal & Community Campus will replace the nonprofit’s current facilities.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Crews broke ground Thursday morning during a public ceremony for the Kentucky Humane Society’s new campus.

The KHS Animal & Community Campus will sit on more than five acres along Orchard Avenue, off Preston Highway, replacing the organization’s existing facilities.

Plans include a 54,000-square-foot building with an additional 7,000 square feet of covered outdoor space.

Leaders said the new campus is “designed to save more lives, serve more families, and strengthen communities” across the city and state.

“We are celebrating hope,” said KHS CEO Alisa Gray. “We are celebrating what is possible when a community comes together and says ‘We are all in for the animals, for families, and for the future of Louisville and the commonwealth.’”

The facility will feature a low-cost veterinary clinic, a 30% increase in housing for cats and dogs, and flexible emergency sheltering for animals rescued from large-scale cruelty or neglect cases or natural disasters.

KHS also said the campus will bring most staff and services together under one roof for the first time. It will include public education areas, community outreach spaces, and expanded resources, along with a larger CARE-a-van program to reach more communities.

The organization aims to raise $37 million for the project and has already secured about $27 million through its All In Campaign, the largest fundraising effort in its history. During Thursday’s ceremony, the KHS Board announced a $500,000 contribution. Leaders are now calling on the community to help double that investment.

Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
