LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A former Louisville police chief has secured a new leadership role in western New York.

On Monday, Buffalo’s mayor appointed Erika Shields as the city’s new police commissioner. She is set to lead the department starting in May, pending confirmation by the Buffalo Common Council.

Shields became chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department in January 2021, following the death of Breonna Taylor and the months of protests that followed.

She stepped down from her position in Louisville in 2023 as Mayor Craig Greenberg took office and has since been working in the private sector.

Before her time in Louisville, Shields served in Atlanta, where she also resigned after the 2020 police shooting of Rayshard Brooks.
