Be Educated

by By Melissa Garrison

School is much different today than it was for me in the 80’s and 90’s. Like totally. I went to a Christian school from grades 7-12.

I went to public school for elementary. And I recall things like the D.A.R.E program. I wish that was still a thing. I remember being scared of drugs. I don’t know if it came from that program.

But it certainly helped to be educated on what may happen if we tried drugs. Friends. Kids are absolutely trying and doing drugs in elementary school. As parents we are not only oblivious to many of the things that our children are exposed to, but we want to be oblivious. We don’t want to know many times what is surrounding our kids daily.

Now, influence is everywhere. I’ll be the first to say that. But when did good influence go out the door? Does anyone anywhere teach our children about littering? Because folks, our county is fitted with litter.

Just look after a big rain at our bridges that are so stopped up with garbage that the water can’t flow smoothly. Look at our roads- finish a Dairy Queen chicken box and toss it in the Highway. Done with your pizza? Toss it into the road where it will be ran over and dodged and then an eyesore until it eventually reaches the ditch.

Manners and morals. Respect for adults. I know, it starts at home. But when I was in school disrespect was not tolerated. Kids laugh at adults when they are being corrected these days.

Public school, private schools, I feel like they need a hard reset. From the very bottom up- kids are struggling from young ages with complicated home situations. It’s the norm for kids to be from here to there with grandparents and great grandparents raising them. It’s the norm for kids to have parents from my generation that are living every day in drug addiction.

That was when drugs became a necessity to many of my friends. I’ve saw the effects. And I don’t like it. I’ve saw families destroyed. I’ve saw lives lost. I saw good talent and education be thrown away because of drugs Even Homer and Henry- were better influences than we have today. And I sure do miss them too.
