LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — As Central and Eastern Kentucky experience their first mix of snow and ice this season, drivers are being urged to slow down and stay alert. Slick roads on Monday created hazardous travel conditions across the region.

AAA Blue Grass is reminding motorists to adjust their driving habits for winter weather.

“That first snow really reminds people that they need to change their driving habits a bit when we get into the winter months,” said Lori Weaver-Hawkins with AAA Blue Grass.

Weaver-Hawkins emphasized that even light snowfall can make roads dangerous.

“Just because snowfall is light doesn’t mean it’s not going to cause some hazards on our roadways,” she said.

AAA’s Winter Driving Safety Tips:

  • Slow down: Match your speed to road conditions.

  • Increase following distance: Leave up to three times more space between vehicles.

  • Brake early: Begin slowing before intersections or turns.

  • Avoid sudden lane changes: Snow and ice often build up between lanes.

  • Stay calm if you skid: Ease off the accelerator and steer in the direction you want to go.

Drivers should also turn off cruise control during bad weather, clear all windows and mirrors before driving, and keep an emergency kit in their vehicle.

“When you have adequate tread and pressure in your tires, it not only keeps you safe on the roadways all year long but also helps you get the most out of every gallon of gas,” Weaver-Hawkins added.
