Resident of The Villages detained with meth and syringes

A 38-year-old resident of the Village of Summerhill has been detained again after deputies discovered methamphetamine and needles in his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Brandon Matthew Elkins was stopped along State Road 44 and County Road 475 in Wildwood around 9:40 p.m. on Friday for driving a gray Toyota Highlander with damaged tag lights. A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy saw that Elkins, the vehicle’s sole occupant, was speaking quickly, acting erratically, and seemed frightened.

A K-9 unit was called and alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. During a check of a blue rucksack, deputies uncovered many needles and a transparent container containing two grams of a crystal-like substance. The material tested positively for methamphetamine.

Elkins was arrested on allegations of possessing methamphetamine and drug equipment. A criminal history check indicated that he was already serving active probation for a 2025 burglary of an empty structure.

He was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and is being held without bond owing to his probation violation.
