An Oklahoma father and his four-year-old son were discovered dead in Texas on Wednesday, according to Gainesville police.
Amber Alerts were issued earlier this week for four-year-old Andres ‘Harry’ Furley after officials reported that his father, Caleb Furley, failed to appear at his Norman, Oklahoma, residence for a handover with the boy’s mother on Sunday.
Authorities issued an arrest warrant for parental kidnapping while they sought across state lines.
Gainesville police said they received a call from a relative on Monday, who informed them that the father and kid were seen visiting a local shop that afternoon. The business has also previously contacted police to report a strange man with a child.
However, the father and son could not be located at that time.
On Wednesday morning, with no fresh developments in the inquiry, police returned to the neighborhood business to investigate any security footage from Monday. Police saw what looked to be both the father and the child walking away from the site.
Later Wednesday, the bodies of a man and a boy, believed to be Caleb and Andres Furley, were discovered in Gainesville, authorities say.
According to newly released court documents, Andres’ parents separated approximately a year ago and had no formal custody agreement. They did, however, have an arrangement in place that allows Furley to watch their son on weekends while his mother works.
Caleb Furley’s family members told police that he had grown increasingly unstable in recent months, and they were concerned about his mental health. Meanwhile, according to Furley’s arrest warrant, his former partner informed police that he had become increasingly paranoid and had made unsettling statements regarding their relationship.
Furley’s family reportedly informed authorities that he had ceased attending counseling appointments some weeks ago.
This is an active inquiry, and the medical examiner will make a positive identification.
