Police have detained a man accused of shooting a bow at a park in Greenwood, causing a juvenile to be struck by an arrow and require surgery.
According to court documents, Seth Vogel, 18, is facing a Level 5 felony for criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
On August 31, officers from the Greenwood Police Department responded soon after 9 p.m. to the 800 block of W. Stop 18 Road after dispatch reported that a juvenile female had been injured by a bow.
Police arrived at St. Francis and spoke with the victim, who told them Vogel had reportedly taken a bow from the bed of a neighboring vehicle, according to court filings. She stated that she observed the bow was pointing in her way and that Vogel apparently fired the arrow while nocking it.
She reported that the arrow had pierced her right calf. As part of the inquiry, authorities got testimonies from a witness who claimed Vogel had a “crossbow” and was pointing it at random persons. The witness claimed Vogel pointed the pistol toward the woman and overheard her exclaim, “Stop, don’t point it at me,” before allegedly shooting her with it.
Vogel allegedly fled the area before police arrived to talk with him. On September 1, police arrived at Methodist Hospital, where the victim had been taken for further treatment. When they arrived, they spoke with the victim’s relative and discovered that the arrow had entered the skin before exiting, leaving two wounds in the victim’s lower right calf.
According to court filings, the victim’s damage necessitated surgery to remove the remaining fragments of the arrow. Police quickly contacted the girl again, who explained that she and a friend had planned to meet Vogel and another youngster at Freedom Springs to play pickleball.
She claimed Vogel then reached for a bow and arrow from a nearby pickup vehicle and started pointing it at her and others. She remembered shouting, “No, Seth, no,” and sliding her pickleball paddle to protect her leg before he reportedly launched the arrow.
The sufferer yelled at Seth, saying, “It’s in my leg.” Vogel reportedly replied, “No, it is not.” “It is not in my leg?” The victim recalls pointing to the wound and stating, “”It’s not my fault,” Vogel explained.
The victim stated that she and Vogel had no conflicts before the occurrence. On September 4, Vogel was taken from his high school classroom and interviewed by police to learn more about the incident.
Vogel informed the detective that he took the bow and arrow from a pickup truck after receiving permission from the owner to hold and fire it.
Vogel stated that he now believes he was supposed to shoot the arrow into the grass rather than in the direction of anyone, citing a “miscommunication” that caused him to point the arrow low toward the ground with people in front. According to court documents, he stated that he never intended for the arrow to strike the victim, instead believing that it “would bounce and stop its forward motion.”
He said that the arrow lacked a tip and had a plastic shaft. He stated that he did not recall anyone saying, “No, Seth, no,” and that he assisted the sufferer by removing a portion of the arrow from his calf. He was subsequently arrested and brought to Johnson County Jail.
According to online court documents, Vogel has subsequently entered a $1,000 cash bond with the clerk’s office. He is due to appear in Johnson Superior Court 3 on September 28 for his first hearing in the matter. According to court records, Vogel has been ordered to keep away from Freedom Park.
