A 36-year-old Bushnell woman driving a Cadillac was arrested on multiple offenses during a traffic stop that discovered an open beer, unprescribed pills, and marijuana.
Gloria Stephanie Serrano was driving a white 2003 Cadillac at approximately 4:15 p.m. On Wednesday, a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy pulled her over on U.S. 301 in Bushnell. The sheriff’s office received a complaint about a careless driver, and the deputy noticed the vehicle failing to stay in its lane, according to an arrest record.
When deputies approached Serrano, they noticed she had watery eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of alcohol. She denied drinking and told deputies that she had taken quetiapine earlier that day for bipolar illness. During field sobriety tests in a nearby company driveway, she stumbled, lost her balance, and couldn’t follow directions.
A search of the vehicle turned up a half-empty, chilled can of Budweiser beer in the center console. Deputies discovered a cracked oxycodone pill in Serrano’s handbag, as well as an intact one. A search of the passenger door pocket revealed an orange vial containing hydroxyzine hydrochloride and donepezil hydrochloride, both of which are legend medications requiring a prescription.
Additionally, officers discovered 2.5 grams of marijuana on the driver’s side floorboard, a handmade smoking device manufactured from a 20-ounce soda bottle on the passenger seat, and a partially burned marijuana cigarette.
Serrano was taken to the Sumter County Detention Center, where she refused to give a breath sample.
She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, refusing to take a DUI test, possessing a controlled substance, possessing a legend drug without a prescription, possessing marijuana, and possessing drug paraphernalia. She was also cited for keeping an open container of alcohol in her vehicle.
She was eventually released after posting the $8,500 bond.
