Ten people have been taken into custody and charged in a retail fraud investigation carried out by police in Canton, Michigan, officials said Thursday.
Law enforcement conducted a two-day crackdown earlier this month at several Canton stores, including CVS, Home Depot, Kohl’s, Kroger, Lowe’s, Meijer, Sam’s Club, Target, Ulta, Walgreens, and Walmart, as part of a “Retail Fraud Disruption Detail,” according to the Canton Police Department.
According to police, all ten people have been charged with “varying degrees” of retail fraud, with two “believed to have been involved in a fraud scheme exceeding $100,000 in merchandise from regional home improvement stores over the past year.”
Canton’s interim police chief, Joseph Bialy, stated in a written statement that “our department’s efforts shift the focus from individual shoplifters to dismantling the broader criminal networks that drive systemic theft and violence. ” We have formed working relationships with many of the regularly targeted retail shops in our region, and we appreciate their vested interest in destroying the illegal operations that exist in southeast Michigan.”
Police said they plan to undertake similar operations for the rest of the year.
