A Cold Weather Advisory is now in effect from midnight EST (11 p.m. CST) tonight until 7 p.m. EST (6 p.m. CST) Monday. An Extreme Cold Warning will follow, remaining in effect from 7 p.m. EST (6 p.m. CST) Monday until 11 a.m. EST (10 a.m. CST) Tuesday.
For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills are expected to drop as low as 10 below zero. During the Extreme Cold Warning, dangerously cold wind chills could range from 10 below to as low as 20 below zero.
The alerts cover portions of south central Indiana and east central, north central, northwest, and south central Kentucky.
These bitterly cold wind chills could lead to hypothermia or frostbite if proper precautions are not taken.
Officials urge residents to dress in layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves, if going outside. Travelers should use caution and wear appropriate cold-weather clothing. People are also encouraged to check frequently on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors. Portable heaters should be used safely, and generators or grills should never be operated indoors.
